Girls just want to have fungi. No, really. We do. In real life, I'm a PhD candidate studying mycology. Because fungi are totally sweet. I work on ectomycorrhizal fungi, which are a kind of fungus that grows symbiotically on the roots of trees. The fungus absorbs nutrients, primarily nitrogen, from the soil and exchanges them for carbohydrates that the host tree produces. My general interests include biodiversity, ecosystem function, ecological succession, and phylogeography. Currently, my research focuses on host preference of ectomycorrhizal fungi, with an emphasis on how it affects community assembly and interactions among species.
