Costa Rica: La Selva Biological Station

La Selva is a lowland tropical wet forest preserve in the northern part of Costa Rica. It is owned and operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies.

passionflower (Passiflora vitifolia)

in the Rubiaceae family

I've forgotten what this flower was, but it was very odd-looking and swarmed with bees.

fer-de-lance (Bothrops asper) approximately 1.3m long

fer-de-lance (Bothrops asper) close-up -- Yes, I got way too close to a deadly poisonous pit viper in order to take its portrait.

But see? It's got pits and everything.

male strawberry dart frog (Oophaga pumilio)

female strawberry dart frog (Oophaga pumilio) tending tadpoles in a bromeliad

large moth with transparent triangular patches on wings (somebody said it was a hawkmoth, but it's antennae look too feathery to me)

chestnut-mandibled toucan (Ramphastos swainsonii) -- unfortunately, the only photo of a toucan I got the whole trip

ring-tailed coati (Nasua nasua), my first sighting -- better photos to come later
